Sin and life

We strive to be healthy, we put millions toward finding a cure, we identify life with health…

But how shocked we become when we realize that Life, in Your eyes, can be entered without us being healthy… Jesus, You state even stronger: Life, for some of us, can be entered just through crippleness…

+If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.+(Matt 18:8-9)

God’s ways for us are so opposite to the world’s obsession about perfection. Actually, Jesus asks from us just one perfection – radical rejection of any sin. Just sin can rob us from Life, nothing else. Have you ever meditated on how freeing from the anxieties of this life this God’s rule is?

When we start to fight with concrete sin in our lives, indeed, this often produces a certain crippleness in us through the eyes of others.

“What?! You are not joining us at the party? You will not drink? What? You will not lie with us? Then you are a coward! What? You are still virgin? At this age?! You are so lame then, you are sick!” …and a myriad of similar diagnoses we often hear from people around. And we become scared, we become persuaded that life is slipping from our hands, that we really are missing something essential, if we are not following the same rules the majority follows, even if they are sinful ones…

Jesus knows us. He knows our hearts: how natural for us it is to fear losing life. This fear is so strong. It’s a survival instinct. It is a good one, as, in fact, it resonates our true likeness to Him and our heritage to live forever, but the problem is that we are so often deceived by where and in what Life is.

Jesus is a good shepherd. He really cares about us. He loves us; therefore, He never agrees with any deception of this world and directs us toward what is truth.

Sin and Life never go together. Do not be deceived! It’s better to become crippled in the eyes of people, according to the standards of this world, than to choose sin. Reject sin, even if it costs, and You will enter Life! That’s Jesus’ heart! His calling to every one of us.

Sin offers just an imitation of Life, and always leaves us and others more broken…

What a blessing to be called out to Life by a Saviour through such verses. What a gift of freedom from BAD fear (to be “not healthy enough”); what a gift of good fear (to lose real life)!

May all our worldly fears be broken, may our hearts never stop fighting for true Life and true Health! May fear of losing our worldly health not stop us from choosing the opposite of sin: Life.

Jesus, empower us to reject each and every sin, without counting the cost… We trust in You!
